Justice Sisi Khampepe, the Chairperson of the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into apartheid-era crimes, says they will investigate allegations of political interference that hindered the attainment of justice for the victims and families of apartheid crimes.
Khampepe was briefing the media in Johannesburg earlier today on the work of the Commission into Allegations Regarding Efforts or Attempts to Stop the Investigation or Prosecution of Truth and Reconciliation Commission Cases.
She says they will examine the 23 pending high court cases involving apartheid crimes, where families of the victims claim political interference impeded investigations and prosecutions.
Khampepe says the commission is also tasked with making recommendations about what measures should be taken against those responsible for impeding justice.
She says over the next three weeks they will bring together all interested persons and institutions to a pre-hearing meeting to agree on the programme of the inquiry’s work and conclude on a timeline for all the procedural steps that are essential for the smooth running of the inquiry.
